Hospira's SEDLine is a "first-of-its-kind product" in the monitoring of patient consciousness. Eclipse worked closely with doctors and patients to design a patient monitoring system which meets the needs of both parties.

Eclipse Product Development was challenged with developing a product that would help Hospira leapfrog its competition and set a new industry standard in a tight market. To be successful the new device would need to meet the technological requirements of the anesthesiologist and satisfy the emotional expectations of the patient.

In the course of our field research, designers found that existing patient monitors, when used bedside, can prematurely agitate the surgical patient. The monochrome screens and fields of identical keys on existing monitors suggest the sterile, clinical nature of the operating room.

By reworking the user interface, our designers and user interface experts were able to significantly reduce the number of operator controls on the face of the monitor - from 19 to six. This update helps the product take on an unassuming, yet capable appearance without sacrificing the precision and functionality which anesthesiologists demand.

SEDLine is a patient-friendly, easy-to-use tool that helps alleviate patient concerns regarding sedation and consciousness levels throughout the procedure. SEDLine removes these concerns at the most stressful time for patients and their families, prior to surgery.

Eclipse's research, design and engineering capabilities helped to make this innovative medical product real. We met the needs of multiple constituencies while maintaining product integrity.
